Bitcoin tips on Twitter!

Social media giant Twitter will add a Bitcoin tip option, allowing any user to pay via the platform. This option was already possible with the Brave browser, which offered tips in #BAT, Brave's token.

In a blog post Thursday, Twitter product manager Esther Crawford said the crypto-currency tipping feature would be available to all iOS users worldwide and that the platform planned to roll out options for Android in the coming weeks.

"We want everyone on Twitter to have access to ways to get paid," Crawford said. "Digital currencies that encourage more people to participate in the economy and help people send money to each other across borders and with as little friction as possible - help us achieve that."

In addition to linked services, Twitter tips can be used through the Bitcoin (BTC) Lightning Network or by adding a BTC address directly to one's profile. "Twitter takes no commission," according to Crawford.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey previously hinted that a BTC tipping option was in development when the social media company revealed that its "Tip Jar" concept was designed to allow platform users to reward content creators with the push of a button. He also mentioned Square's plans to create a decentralized exchange for bitcoin.

Crypto-currency education and ease of use will drive Twitter's BTC experience.

Despite growing awareness, the cryptocurrency industry is still in the early stages of widespread adoption, with most casual Twitter users still unaware of the technical ins and outs of this relatively nascent technology. For example, even many tech-savvy social media users may not be sufficiently educated on how to purchase, store and manage their digital assets and could be completely unaware of Twitter's bitcoin tip payment option.

If Twitter can simplify the entire crypto-currency payment experience for its users, the company could be on the right track, adding this feature.

Twitter could also provide its users with a brief tutorial on bitcoin and the Lightning Network. Finally, all bitcoin tips will most likely be facilitated by using the Lightning Network, reducing the costs associated with a transaction.
